The congregation of Community Church of Honolulu in Nuuanu has simple words to live by that’s posted on their website: “Real people, living real lives, sharing real faith.” No complex theological doctrines, but profound principles by which to live. That is shared by even the children of this United Church of Christ congregation. A Sunday School class, led by Arlene Chang, wanted to share their real faith and came up with the idea of holding a "Souper Bowl of Caring" on this past Super Bowl Sunday. The children raised more than $800 for Hawai`i Meals on Wheels, attesting to the fact that even children can make big difference in our world.
The Hawai`i Meals on Wheels team was invited the church’s morning worship service on Sunday, April 18, to share about the nonprofit during the service’s “Mission Moment.” Claire Shimabukuro, Hawai`i Meals on Wheels executive director, welcomed the opportunity to thank the congregation for their generous support and to present certificates of appreciation to the children. Joining Claire were Deena Ahaukuelo, Program Coordinator, and Belinda Quach, Social Services Coordinator.
Certificates were given to Kenn Chong, Kellie Hirotsu, Tyler Lunow-Luke, Tommy Mahon, and Rachel Mufrakami (Claire: Could you help me with the additional name?) as well as their Sunday School teacher Arlene Chang.
In addressing the congregation, Claire referred to Micah 6:8, which states that God requires us to do justice, be kind-hearted and merciful, and to be humble. She said that the children demonstrated these qualities because the funds collected will ensure older adults in our community do not go hungry or be undernourished. She also said the congregation’s generosity over the years was truly humbling.
Claire also acknowledged the dedication of Carol Gunn, the church’s Volunteer/Missions Committee Co-Chair, for faithfully serving as a Hawai`i Meals on Wheels volunteer over the past two years, faithfully delivering meals to Makiki residents every other Thursday. Carol signed up as a volunteer after Claire came to visit the church to thank them for their support of Hawai`i Meals on Wheels.
